Wolf howling is one of the most suggestive and powerful sounds in nature. A frightening and beautiful sound of a distant nocturnal landscape. When howling, wolves acoustically mark their environment and connect with their pack members. They holler during clear, calm nights, preferably during the period of twilight or at the onset of the night. Are the conditions for sound transmission better at twilight?

FM exhibition:
The radio is often linked to dreams, associations, unconscious processes. The haunting presence of the radio connects places and people, times and spaces. Between intimacy and its public presence, it permeates the listener and his/her environment with its uncanny sounds and disembodied voices. It generates what Steven Connor calls the “auditory unconscious” – the counterpart of Walter Benjamin’s “optical unconscious” – an awareness of “everything that ordinarily fell upon the ear without being recognized or registered, but that nevertheless shaped feelings and perception.” Radio gives us access to layers of reality that the naked ear can’t hear and strictly interpenetrates reality and illusion.
This edition of radioCona FM exhibition will explore the dreamscapes and remote nocturnal landscapes as a physical, biological, ecological, or philosophical dimension, as demonstrated in sonic perception. Introduced by three evenings focused on wolf howling, the broadcast will accompany the listener in five hypnagogic nights of radiophonic listening.
As usual, the broadcast will take place during the winter, and will start at twilight, at that point of the day when day turns into night. This dimension of night time radio transmission allows us to play on the threshold between attention and inattention and the blurred line between the exterior and the interior.
One part of the broadcast will focus on dreamscapes and the slipping between the conscious and unconscious states, coming and going from wakefulness to abandon, laying on the liminal zones of consciousness, or interrogating cognitive processes – from dream narratives to the unheard sounds of the sleeping bodies, from streams of consciousness to exploring listening as a psychoanalytical tool. Other parts of the broadcast will investigate sound ecologies, environmental and remote listening, and will focus on nocturnal perceptions. Following one of these two thematic lines, the FM exhibition will include a series of new commissioned works curated by radioCona, a programme from Dreamlands curated by Radio Arts, and a selection from The Remote Series curated by Anna Friz/Konrad Korabiewski commissioned by Skálar FM for Soundproof on Radio National Australia.
